While we might be a wee bit biased, there’s simply no denying the facts: Assynt is the perfect base for your NC500 adventure. This remote corner of Sutherland is a place of peaceful settlements, dramatic landscapes and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world: we are not even exaggerating.
It is home to our bonnie wee fishing village and Lochinver Larder, cradled between Highland hills and the sheltered sea loch shores, with unrivalled views of Assynt’s most iconic character, the mighty Suilven.
Lochinver also happens to be the centre of our pie-shaped universe, and we’re proud to call it home. We know first-hand how special this whole area is, from the stunning scenery in every direction to the warm Highland hospitality – best served with a hot pie!
Here are a few of our top picks for accommodation in and around Lochinver, ranging from a hostel and small B&B, to a high-end hotel and luxury glamping.
Overview:
Overlooking Loch Nedd, on the beautiful coastal road between Lochinver and Kylesku, the shepherds’ huts are perched in a prime, peaceful location within easy reach of the area’s famous beaches. Wake up to serene views across the loch and, after a busy day exploring, relax with a soak in the wood-fired hot tub or rainfall shower, before getting cosy in front of the wood-burning stove. Each hut has its own private area, making it the ideal romantic escape for two. Bliss.
Overview:
Inchnadamph Lodge is not your standard hostel and this is apparent from the moment you cast your eyes upon it. The attractive white-washed building has been lovingly converted into tasteful, comfortable hostel accommodation, complete with roaring fires, a small shop, and spacious common areas for cooking, dining and relaxing. With Assynt’s mountains literally on the doorstep, and Inchnadamph Hotel next door for post-adventure dinner and drinks, the lodge is a very popular base for hillwalking with a variety of rooms for families, couples and groups.
Overview:
One of the best ways to experience Highland hospitality is to stay with local hosts. Located in Clashmore, a short drive from the clifftop Lighthouse of Stoer, the B&B has just two guestrooms, contained within a converted barn building. Separate from the main house, guests also benefit from their own outdoor space but still have the added luxury of a homecooked full Scottish breakfast in the morning with fresh, free range eggs. Not to mention the on-site, Choc-O-Latté Café serving Belgian chocolate treats and hot chocolate.
Overview:
This stylish, waterfront hotel sits across from the striking Kylesku Bridge and has everything you need in once place: gorgeous views, an inviting bar and an award-winning restaurant which focuses on fresh seafood and local produce. What started as a coaching inn back in 1883 is now a beautiful, modern getaway and a delightful place to watch the sunset over Loch Glencoul from the outside decking or indoor conservatory.
Overview:
Davar is located in Lochinver, about half way round the NC500 route and right at the heart of the North West Highlands Geopark. This family bed and breakfast, hosts spectacular views across Lochinver harbour with wonderful views of the village and the mountains behind.
"Dave and Caren were so lovely and welcoming, giving us good local tips of places to visit and hiking advice! Full of local & historical knowledge. The rooms were so homely and comfortable, would highly recommend!"
