5 perfect Lochinver Larder pie side dishes

Everyone loves a pie: whether it’s a meaty treat, veggie number or a cheeky sweet pie, there is a pie for everyone.

And while we pride ourselves here at the Larder for creating one of the best pies around, let’s not forget that they can be served with a little something on the side – to make a hearty meal or delicious pudding.

And so, we thought it would be helpful to share our suggestions of the best side dishes to serve a Lochinver Larder pie with…

First up, it’s old faithful: the mashed potato.

Whether you prefer it smooth, lumpy or creamy, it’s the perfect side dish to go alongside a pie, especially if you drizzle some gravy on the top. We know you know how to make mashed potato, but sometimes it’s good to be reminded of the different ways to mash – we could all do with a reminder of a classic sometimes!

With its fluffy texture and buttery taste, why not add some cheese, mustard or nutmeg to the mix to really add some punch? Even if you just season with salt and pepper, it’s sure to be a hit with the family when you bring this to the table!

Roasted broccoli with chilli, garlic, and a hint of soy

This may sound a little bit fancier than mash potato, but it’ll take the same amount of time!

Vegan by accident, this tasty dish should appeal to all – even those who don’t eat their greens.

Roasted garlic and chilli level up the broccoli while still keeping it simple and healthy – and the kick of the soy and sesame seeds just add a little something to the side dish, and will compliment your pie well.

While this is an easy recipe, a watchful eye is needed to ensure the broccoli doesn’t burn, so make sure you’re not distracted with this one!

A seasonal asparagus

We love cooking seasonally here at the larder – which no doubt you’ll have noticed with our limited edition pies (lamb in spring, Halloween themed, Christmas pies).

While more indulgent than broccoli, asparagus is known as one of the delicacies of the veggie world, with a very distinct flavour. British asparagus is best eaten between May and July, so make sure you add some to your shopping list during these months!

Another easy side dish, like the broccoli recipe this one involves garlic, but also delicious shredded parmesan, melted gently on top of the asparagus.

It works so well with a Lochinver Larder pie – whether it’s meat or fish, or veggie, it’s the perfect pairing.

Buttery baby potatoes and herbs

Another classic, this is a great side dish to serve with a pie. You can buy these ready-made, but there’s nothing better than serving up a side dish that you’ve cooked (especially when you’re treating yourself to a Lochinver Larder pie!).

Baby potatoes with butter and herbs is an elegant way to prepare the potatoes – and it’s super easy, too. It’s a staple dish and can be served with all sorts of meals. It doesn’t even need the oven, which is always a bonus if the oven is already in use.

And finally, our favourite: custard for the sweet pies!

We couldn’t forget our sweet pies on this list, could we? From rhubarb and strawberry to apple and blackcurrant, or even our indulgent chocolate, pear and almond pie – custard is the number one side dish to serve these with.

And, like the potatoes, while custard can be bought by the can-full, wouldn’t it be more fun to make your own?! We’ve all watched Bake Off and marvelled at how easy it is to make custard on a tricky technical challenge.

We’ve chosen trusty Jamie Oliver for this recipe – and it uses no more than 5 ingredients, taking 35 mins! Again though, this requires a keen eye for detail, so make sure you’re free of distractions to avoid scrambling your custard!
